Manager/Senior Controller Role

GRF CPAS & Advisors, a Bethesda, MD CPA Firm is in search of a Supervisor/Controller join our Outsourced Accounting and Advisory Services team. This position is fully remote although persons local to the DMV area are welcomed to come to the office at any time.

The OAAS Manager plays a pivotal role in the Outsourced Accounting and Advisory Services (OAAS) practice by overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, supervising staff, and delivering high-quality, audit-ready financial reporting for a portfolio of nonprofit and/or government contractor clients. This position ensures client engagements are executed smoothly and efficiently, serving as a bridge between the engagement team and senior leadership. Managers are expected to proactively build and strengthen client relationships - serving as trusted advisors who understand client goals, anticipate needs, and contribute insights - while managing deliverables, budgets, and team development in support of firm growth and culture.

Essential Functions:

  1. Oversee daily accounting operations and deliverables for a portfolio of nonprofit and/or government contractor clients.
  2. Ensure timely and accurate monthly close processes, financial reporting, and compliance requirements (e.g., grant and contract compliance, etc.).
  3. Serve as the primary point of contact for ongoing client communications; maintain regular touchpoints to foster trust and address evolving needs.
  4. Support client onboarding by establishing workflows, timelines, and expectations; coordinate with clients and internal teams to ensure a smooth transition.
  5. Regularly present financial results and key insights to client management and leadership teams.
  6. Plan, schedule, and staff engagements using firm policies and procedures; delegate effectively to promote staff development and operate at highest and best use.
  7. Monitor engagement budgets, time budgets, and resource utilization; assist with billing and contribute to realization and utilization goals for assigned clients.
  8. Identify opportunities to add value through process improvements, automation, and advisory insights; begin developing awareness of client service expansion opportunities.
  9. Review and evaluate internal controls and work programs prepared by staff; provide real-time coaching, training, and feedback, including explaining reasoning behind corrections.
  10. Supervise and review work of Staff and Senior Accountants and mentor Supervisors as needed; actively participate in the department coaching program as a coach to assigned team members.
  11. Ensure that client financial statements and supporting schedules are prepared in accordance with GAAP, applicable regulations, and firm standards; proactively identify GAAP implications in client transactions.
  12. Anticipate problem areas and questions that may arise; keep partner/leadership informed of significant developments, analyze issues, and recommend solutions.
  13. Model professionalism in virtual and in-person settings (responsiveness, meeting etiquette) and promote an inclusive, accountable, and collaborative team culture.
  14. Stay current on relevant standards, regulations, and industry trends affecting nonprofit and government contractor clients; maintain proficiency in the OAAS technology stack and modern cloud-based accounting tools.

Other (Secondary) Functions:

  1. Acts as an instructor in professional development programs.
  2. Prepares other reports and projects as requested from time to time by the partners.
  3. Such other duties as may be assigned.
  4. Participates in firm's practice and proposal development efforts.
