Overview
Job Summary: The Utility Scale Energy Storage team is looking for an innovative and dynamic engineer to
serve as the Battery Technology & Sizing Lead in a key Sr. Engineering role. The successful candidate will
support the team as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in evaluating existing and emerging energy storage
technologies, including battery technologies, PCS/power electronics, and alternative energy storage
solutions. The role will focus on assessing technology performance, technical maturity, commercial
readiness, cost, and applicability to utility-scale projects and new use cases, while also providing strong
technical expertise in BESS sizing and system optimization.
The successful candidate will lead BESS sizing methodologies, manage system losses and project
specific assumptions, and ensure optimized solutions aligned with power purchase agreements and
other project requirements. The candidate will also be expected to continuously improve BESS sizing
tools and engineering processes. Experience applying AI, automation, data analytics, or software tools to
engineering applications is preferred, along with an open and innovative mindset toward adopting
emerging technologies to improve engineering quality, efficiency, and decision-making.
This position generally prefers in-person office presence at Juno Beach headquarters but offers hybrid
options for the right candidate.
Key Responsibilities
1. BESS Sizing & Optimization SME
Support the lead Subject Matter Expert (SME) for utility-scale BESS sizing, providing technical
leadership on sizing methodology, assumptions, optimization, and project-specific sizing
decisions.
Develop and optimize end-to-end BESS sizing from the point of interconnection through
GSU/substation, PCS/inverters, DC system, and battery, accounting for system losses,
degradation, augmentation/overbuild strategies, temperature, operating constraints, and
contractual requirements.
Own and continuously improve BESS sizing methodologies, calculators, assumptions, and
technical guidance to ensure consistent and accurate sizing across projects.
Organize and maintain a clear tracking record of sizing assumptions, inputs, decisions, and
results from early-stage development through project execution.
Review project-specific sizing results, identify optimization opportunities and technical risks, and
provide sizing recommendations to Engineering, Development, Supply Chain, and project teams.
Fully own and maintain the sizing tools to ensure the latest and greatest BESS and PCS
equipment ratings are incorporated in the sizing database
2. Technology Evaluation
Support the lead SME in the team to assess and evaluate new and existing battery technologies
and their applicability to utility-scale systems.
Conduct thorough technical evaluations and performance assessments such as degradation,
efficiency, available energy, and overall reliability, SOC/SOH, encompassing battery cells,
modules and system. And utilization of Claude, VS Code, Devon Desktop, etc. to build tools for
performance prediction.
Evaluate non-lithium-ion and emerging energy storage technologies for new and evolving use
cases, regional market demand, assessing technical maturity, performance, safety, scalability,
supply chain readiness, and commercial viability.
Develop preliminary system sizing and CAPEX estimates for alternative energy storage
technologies to support technology selection, business-case development, and pilot or
commercial deployment decisions.
Utilize the annual technology RFP and RFI database from major and emerging energy storage
technology vendors to track and visualize technology advancements, product roadmaps,
performance, and commercial readiness, and provide a concise summary of key findings and
recommendations to management.
3. Digital Tools, Automation & AI
Develop and improve engineering tools that automate BESS sizing, technical evaluations, battery
performance forecast, and repetitive engineering workflows.
Utilization of AI, automation, data analytics, or software-based tools to improve engineering
productivity and decision-making is preferred.
Experience developing engineering tools using Excel/VBA, Python, Power BI, low-code platforms,
AI tools, or similar technologies is preferred.
Demonstrated curiosity and willingness to adopt emerging technologies, including AI, and identify
practical applications that improve engineering quality, speed, consistency, and knowledge
sharing in a dynamic environment.
