About the AGO
The Washington State Attorney General’s Office (AGO) offers a 2026 Honors Program for third‑year law students and judicial clerks to apply for permanent, entry‑level attorney positions. Historically, approximately five applicants receive Assistant Attorney General (AAG) positions, starting August/September 2027. Offers are contingent upon passing the July 2027 Washington State Bar exam or admission to the Bar before the start date.
The AGO covers a diverse legal landscape including consumer protection, environmental law, tribal law, criminal prosecution, and more. The office has over 800 attorneys across 30+ divisions and locations.

Typical Duties
- Research legal issues
- Consult with clients and provide option‑based advice
- Develop litigation strategies
- Identify and prepare witnesses and exhibits
- Prepare pleadings and briefs
- Litigate cases before administrative entities and courts
- Collaborate with professional staff to meet litigation needs
- Contribute positively to a collegial and inclusive community
Qualifications
- Third‑year law student at an ABA‑accredited school or judicial clerk of an appellate or federal court with an ABA JD
- Superior verbal and written communication skills
- Interest in litigation and ability to work independently and in teams
- Excellent interpersonal skills and commitment to a collegial workplace
- Interest in AGO work and public service commitment
- Self‑motivation to learn new law areas and develop skills
- Divisional and geographic preferences that can be satisfied via the program
